Sage Julep

Bourbon Limoncello Drinks , Mixed Drinks with Limoncello

The Mint Julep has been the official drink of the Kentucky Derby for over a hundred years. Some would call that "tradition" but I call it long overdue for a change!

Sage is obviously a wiser herb than mint and limoncello is the duct tape of mixology, it fixes everything. Ginger gives it an unexpected zing that you won't soon forget. It all adds up to a huge improvement over that dumb old mint julep.

This drink does have more steps and ingredients than a mint julep, but even those hailing from Kentucky should still be able to assemble it. (Editor's note - he's originally from just over the border in Ohio, so this qualifies as "good-natured ribbing.")

“If You Like Limoncello” Colada

Mixed Drinks with Limoncello , Rum Limoncello Drinks

This drink is obviously named after the goofy 70s song that sticks in your head for days. I'm hoping that effect will carry over to the drink and eventually you'll say "all right already, dammit, I'll make the drink!"

The namesake song was released in 1979, capping off a decade of ugliness. People with ugly hair wearing ugly clothes, driving their ugly cars to the disco for some cheesy dancing to take their minds off the ugly economy.

I count a surging interest in piña coladas and my own birth as some of the highlights of a decade that was otherwise pretty tough on everyone. It's pretty tough to improve upon such a classic drink, but I think we really nailed it here.

Let me know if you agree in the glowing praise (comments) section below.

The AB Negative

Bourbon Limoncello Drinks , Mixed Drinks with Blood Orange Liqueur , Mixed Drinks with Limoncello

You know what's really missing from the whole holiday experience in the US? It's not more shopping time, that's been expanding for years. It's mid-July and I'm expecting to see Christmas decorations at the stores any time now.

No, it's an official drink for Halloween. That was going to be your next guess, I know. I don't know if you've ever taken your kids out begging for candy but it's a loud, chaotic affair. A perfect excuse to extend the limoncello-drinking season well beyond summer.

This cocktail is all class. The color is faintly reminiscent of blood, but not cheesily so. The glass is perfect for holding while observing others bob for apples. The sprig of rosemary marks you as a discerning, dignified adult who just happens to be wearing a Barney costume right now.

The drink is named the AB Negative because it establishes the blood/Halloween connection, but also because it's the rarest of all the blood types. Only 0.6% of the population has that blood type--it's true, I just Googled it. That amounts to 1 in 167 people, which somehow sounds far less impressive than 0.6%.

If you confine consumption of this cocktail to Halloween (that's impossible, I know, this is just a thought experiment), then you can only drink it 0.003% of the year. Now THAT'S an impressively rare and uncommonly delicious treat!

Lemon Crema-sicle

Mixed Drinks with Limoncello , Rum Limoncello Drinks

Another drink leveraging the magnificent power of Crema di Limoncello, this frosty creation will make you forgive Captain Morgan for what he did to you back in college.

The name also sounds like it's being pronounced by someone with a thick Italian accent, which never hurts on this site.
